Have you ever sit down and think about how’s your feeling when someone’s trying to give you love? Does it ever make you confused? Does it make you over the moon? Or do you feel nothing at all? And what’s your initial reaction? Refuse it? Embrace it? Or show it off?
After long thoughts: self-evaluation and observed people around me, I feel like we tend to get confused when there’s love in front of us. At first, I was in big denial by saying I’m doing great at receiving love from people around me, but in reality most of the times I tried to shrug it off by rejecting it. Of course, I wouldn’t notice this until my attempt to give love to some people got rejected.
When my love was being rejected by others, it made me frustrated. But, I promise myself to not judge others just because everything didn’t work the way I wanted. It leads me to this thoughts, did someone ever teach us about receiving love from others? For this context, love comes from both platonic and romantic relationships. The answer to the question, based on my personal experiences: no.
Therefore, it is completely understandable if we get confused about what to do when we receive love. All along our life, people around us always telling and teaching us how to give love, never the other way around. We have zero knowledge of receiving love from others. And, when you’re in situation where it’s something new to you, your initial reaction is to be defensive in order to protect yourself. So, rejecting it comes to our minds.
I haven’t found the best way to solve it and actually I’m not a professional who would give you the best advice. But, if I could give an advice for you (again, based on my personal experiences), don’t think too far and try to be more accepting. It wouldn’t be done in one night, go slowly. Start by being honest with yourself, does it make you feel good? Then let it be, let it feel good.
I hope we could always be aware that we deserve the kind love from ourselves and also from others. I hope you know you deserve it, just like I deserve it.
